Most people will find it hard to earn money in running an online shop. It's not that they necessarily have to fail, they could succeed big time if they really wanted to. But, most people won't.
The main reason people fail in e-commerce is — making money is not their real agenda!
"Are you kidding me?!" — I hear you say. "Don't we all want to earn money?"
No, I beg to differ. Most people have little interest in making money, even though they say they do. They don't want to make money. They want to have money. There is a world of difference between having money and earning it. I've seen both. And the difference between having and earning is the difference between night and day.
Some people are born into money. "How lucky!" you might think. Actually, I would have to disagree. People who never have to go and make money fail to make much of themselves. They can end up very lost. Yet so many of us aspire to the results money gives without the effort of going out to earn it. Just like an online shop running on autopilot. Once built it would lay the golden eggs forever without any sort of maintenance. This is not real happiness. Being able to earn money without much effort in time investment would mean that the doors of e-commerce are wide open for all online hustlers. Maybe a few lazy guys succeeded like that and earn real money, but I promise you that you won't.
Reason number two is — people make it too darn complicated!
In their ignorance, a lot of people are just overwhelmed by the technology. They imagine that making money online is up to your technical skills. No, my friends. Your techie skills, or lack of them, are not going to make a bit of difference to your money making abilities online. Successful shop owners focus on finding out what people want and finding the products or services to satisfy. Isn't that what good business is all about? Finding a need and filling it?
Reason number three (most important) why people fail is — they run away from change.
If you look at most people around you — you will see they use every small failure as an excuse to stop. The reality is that only few people are really prepared to go from one challenge to the next one. They interpret setbacks as a sign from heaven to stop doing what they do and move on to something completely different. The Internet is still in its infancy and is still too new for most people to grasp how money making is done on the web. I know of people whose web skills are virtually nil. But, they make very comfortable livings with their online shop. Want to know how they do it?
The model is precisely that there is no model. You have to perpetually adapt. The trap in failure for online business is to try to freeze and stick to a model — be it a design, a product line, SEO, payment solution, or software version.
Successful people focus on their strengths, not their weaknesses. It may well be that they are not good in SEO or designing web graphics. But, they are good at other things they know and build upon those strengths. They do not run away from change, they grow and adore it in a world where the Internet moves very quickly and changes all the time.
